Novak Djokovic Set for Shanghai Masters Return After US Open Exit

Novak Djokovic will make his long-awaited comeback at the 2025 Shanghai Masters, his first tournament since a US Open semi-final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month. The ATP 1000 event, running from October 1–12, will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Tennis and NOW.

Djokovic Eyes Strong Finish to 2025 Season

The 24-time Grand Slam champion has enjoyed huge success in Shanghai, winning the title four times and reaching the final last year before losing to Jannik Sinner. This year marks his 14th main-draw appearance at the prestigious event.

Djokovic, now 38, admitted that best-of-five Grand Slam matches have become a tougher challenge against younger rivals Alcaraz and Sinner. However, he believes shorter formats still give him an edge.

“I think I have a better chance in best-of-three, but in best-of-five it’s tough,” Djokovic said after his US Open exit. “I’m not giving up on Grand Slams. I’ll continue fighting and trying to reach more finals.”

Battle with Alcaraz and Sinner Dominates the Narrative

The Serb has been locked in a fierce rivalry with Alcaraz and Sinner throughout 2025, with both players denying him a Slam title this season. Djokovic hopes Shanghai will offer an opportunity to shift momentum in his favor.

Sinner, who is also competing in Shanghai, hinted at fine-tuning his game as he prepares for another possible showdown with Alcaraz. “We are working on small changes. It’s a process, but I feel motivated,” said the Italian.

Limited Schedule Ahead

Following Shanghai, Djokovic has only one more tournament confirmed on his calendar — the ATP 250 event in Athens. With retirement speculation growing, his performance in Asia could play a decisive role in how his season and future unfold.

The Shanghai Masters promises high-stakes drama with Djokovic’s return, Alcaraz’s dominance, and Sinner’s evolution all set to shape the closing chapters of the 2025 season.
