Lionel Messi Shines With Two Goals as Inter Miami Defeat DC United 3-2 in MLS Playoff Push

Fort Lauderdale, Sept. 21, 2025
Superstar Lionel Messi delivered another masterclass on Saturday, scoring twice and assisting once as Inter Miami beat DC United 3-2 at Chase Stadium, moving closer to securing an MLS Cup playoff berth.
Reports this week suggest Messi, 38, is set to extend his contract with Miami through next year. On the field, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner demonstrated why both the club and Major League Soccer are eager for him to stay, extending his league tally to 22 goals in 22 matches, the highest in MLS this season.
“It was another ordinary night for him, which is extraordinary for any other player,” Miami coach Javier Mascherano said, praising Messi’s ability to both score and elevate his teammates.
Messi Sparks Miami Attack
On a rainy night in Florida, Miami dominated early. In the 35th minute, Messi slipped a precise through ball to Tadeo Allende, who coolly finished past Luis Barraza for 1-0.
DC United equalized in the 52nd through Christian Benteke, but Messi quickly restored Miami’s lead in the 66th, converting from close range after a neat pass from Jordi Alba.
Substitute Mateo Silvetti had the chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot minutes later, but struck the crossbar. Mascherano revealed Messi gifted the kick as a gesture to the 19-year-old.
Messi made amends in the 85th, producing a trademark moment of brilliance. Picking up the ball outside the box, he beat his marker and lofted a left-footed shot over Barraza to seal Miami’s third.
DC’s Jacob Murrell scored deep into stoppage time, but Miami held on for a vital win.
Playoff Picture
The victory lifted Miami to fifth in the Eastern Conference with 52 points, though they must wait to confirm their playoff berth after the New York Red Bulls defeated Montreal.
Elsewhere, NYCFC clinched their ninth playoff spot in 11 seasons, while Philadelphia Union tightened their grip on first place with a narrow 1-0 win over New England.
