Brighton Keep European Hopes Alive with 3-2 Win Over Liverpool

Brighton & Hove Albion stunned newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory at the Amex Stadium on Monday night, reigniting their hopes of qualifying for European competition next season.
In a thrilling encounter, 20-year-old substitute Jack Hinshelwood netted a late winner in the 85th minute to secure all three points for the Seagulls. The win lifts Brighton to eighth place in the Premier League standings on 58 points, bolstering their slim chances of qualifying for Europe—contingent on Chelsea winning the UEFA Conference League.
Brighton Twice Come From Behind in Stunning Display
Liverpool, who have already secured the Premier League title, took an early lead through Harvey Elliott in the 9th minute following a slick team move. But Brighton, determined to keep their season alive, responded through Yasin Ayari in the 32nd minute with a composed finish.
The visitors regained the lead just before half-time when Dominik Szoboszlai floated in a cross-shot that deceived Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen, putting Liverpool 2-1 up at the break.
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler made tactical changes in the second half, introducing Kaoru Mitoma in the 64th minute. The Japanese international made an instant impact, netting the equaliser in the 68th minute after a rebound from Danny Welbeck’s effort.
Hinshelwood’s Late Heroics Secure Vital Victory
With Liverpool visibly lacking intensity since sealing the title on April 28, Brighton pushed hard for a winner. Their persistence paid off when Matt O’Riley set up Hinshelwood in the 85th minute. Initially flagged offside, the goal was awarded after a lengthy VAR review, sparking celebrations among the home crowd.
“Coming off the bench, I wanted to make an impact,” said Hinshelwood post-match. “There was a nervous wait, but it was pure relief when the goal stood.”
European Football Still Within Reach
The result means Brighton now sit three points ahead of Brentford and four clear of Fulham, with Bournemouth still in the mix but holding a game in hand. A win in their final match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday could seal European qualification, depending on other outcomes.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will close their season at Anfield against Crystal Palace, where they will be formally presented with the Premier League trophy.
“We’ve worked really hard all season,” said Liverpool’s Elliott. “We want to enjoy lifting the trophy but also finish strong.”
